about LAND-SHAPE Festival
LAND-SHAPE Festival Hanstholm
The first edition of the LAND-SHAPE Festival took place from the 4th to the 6th of June 2015 in Hanstholm, Denmark as a pilot festival. The event gathered people and artists together to celebrate the region of North Jutland and all its strengths, creating a big experimental art scene and Land Art laboratory.
Hanstholm was chosen as the setting for the first LAND-SHAPE Festival because it epitomizes the essence of the region with its spectacular landscape, it´s North Atlantic connection and the industrial harbor.
The theme of the event was “Regional Resources” which highlighted the local potential and resources. The idea was to combine the art world processes with other sectors of society. All the LAND-SHAPE projects communicated with the local citizens, professionals and institutions in various ways.LAND-SHAPE defines resources as raw materials, products and businesses; volunteers and associations; special knowledge, the uniqueness of various sites, the magnificent landscape in North Jutland, artists and cultural institutions.
At the festival in Hanstholm all, the 12 winners of the OPEN CALL participated, together with 11 North Jutland artists and their 11 invited colleges. For their projects, all the artists took in consideration the local cultural heritage, specific locations and the potential of the region.
The winners from the Open Call presented for the first time to the public their Land Art concepts through experimental installations and workshops. Boris Oicherman was the first artist to realize his work for Thisted Municipality with the long duration performance, “Movie, reenacted”. It was a great opportunity and experience for the visitors to get close to the artistic process, start a dialogue and eventually getting practically involved.
The artists from North Jutland realized 21 projects and they were mostly representatives of “Nørrekær Biennalen”, “Land Art Rebild”, ”Kirsten Kjærs” Museum, “Life-boats”, “Kunst ved Kanalen” and “Bunkerlove”.Beside these art projects, the event offered many other activities, music, fun and good food.
As part of the festival´s program a Land Art symposium took place where high professional standards were set, offering knowledge and opportunities in this specific art field. Prominent artists of Land Art participated such as Jorge Rodriguez Gerada, Alfio Bonanno and Alexandra Engelfriet who added a unique touch to the symposium.
The old town hall in Hanstholm was transformed into an art hall, where all the artists had their own exhibition rooms.
The festival offered a Land Art cinema too and musicians as Mikael K and Klondyke enchanted the audience with their songs at the Lighthouse.
The pilot LAND-SHAPE Festival was a success, surprising its visitors in the most unexpected way, bringing together artists from all over the world and show the potential of Land Art in the beautiful places of North Jutland.
